Answer Questions Clearly

Goal: state your answer in the first sentence.

Start drill 1: First-sentence answer

Why it happens

When asked a question, many people narrate their thinking: context, background, caveats — and the answer arrives thirty seconds in. Listeners lose patience long before that.

Answer first, explain second. It feels abrupt at first; to listeners it sounds confident.

Tips

  • Context goes after the answer, not before.
  • Check you answered the question actually asked, not a nearby one.
