How to practise

  1. 1

    Define, then decide

Open with what the topic means in one sentence, then give your stance. Judges reward clarity over flourish.

  2. 2

Use What → So What → Now What

Describe the situation, explain why it matters, and propose what should happen. Three parts, easy to remember under pressure.

  3. 3

    One fact, one story

A specific fact and a short story beat five vague claims.

Recommended answer structure

What → So What → Now What

Best for: analysis and reflection

  1. 1What
  2. 2So what
  3. 3Now what

Describe the fact, explain why it matters, and say what should happen next. Great for extempore and deep questions.

Example answer to “The impact of social media on mental health.”

  1. WhatTeenagers now spend an average of several hours a day on social apps.
  2. So whatThat matters because comparison and poor sleep are linked to anxiety.
  3. Now whatSo schools and parents should teach healthy use, not just ban phones.
